Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has passed away peacefully at the age of 100.
The Alarmee reports that the Carter Center announced on Sunday that he died at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
Carter, a former peanut farmer and US Navy lieutenant, carved his path in politics by serving as governor of Georgia before leading the nation as president from 1977 to 1981.
In 2019, he became the oldest living former US president, surpassing George H.W. Bush, and was the first American president to reach 100 years of age.
The Carters also held the distinction of being the longest-married presidential couple in US history. Rosalynn Carter, his wife of over 75 years and a renowned advocate for mental health and humanitarian efforts, passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.
President-elect Donald Trump expressed his condolences in a heartfelt statement, praising Carter’s dedication to the nation.
“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
He added, “Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter family during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers.”
Carter’s legacy, characterised by his dedication to public service and humanitarian work, leaves an indelible mark on American history.
