The Lagos State Safety Commission has raised concerns over the growing issue of overcrowding in several nightclubs and lounges across the city.
Director-General/CEO of the Commission, Lanre Mojola, in a statement on Wednesday, reiterated support for the city’s vibrant nightlife and the economic benefits it brings.
However, he stressed the need for nightclub owners and operators to adhere to occupancy limits approved by the Commission.
Mojola pointed out that overcrowding posed serious safety risks, including fire hazards, smoking in public spaces, blocked emergency exits, and an increased likelihood of accidents.
These dangers, he added, not only jeopardise the safety of patrons but also the staff and the general public.
The Commission has urged all hospitality venue owners to comply with the safety regulations and occupancy limits set out by the Lagos State Safety Commission, which are designed to safeguard the well-being of all individuals.
He further revealed that the Commission has begun conducting thorough inspections to monitor compliance, with any establishment found in violation facing immediate closure and potential legal action.
Mojola expressed gratitude for the cooperation of all stakeholders in ensuring a safe environment, stating, “Let us work together to keep Lagos safe and thriving.”
