In a significant disciplinary decision, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned the Libyan Football Federation with a $50,000 fine and awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory to Nigeria’s Super Eagles following the disrupted Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match on October 15, 2024.
The decision, delivered by CAF’s Disciplinary Board, found Libya in violation of multiple CAF codes, leading to a forfeited match and punitive measures.
CAF cited breaches of Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
The match, scheduled to take place in Benghazi, was abandoned under contentious circumstances, which reportedly included maltreatment of Nigeria’s players and improper match conditions, prompting an official complaint by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
In its ruling, CAF declared, “The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of $50,000, with payment due within 60 days of notification.”
Additionally, CAF dismissed any other motions or requests for further appeals, solidifying the disciplinary outcome.
This decisive action not only underscores CAF’s commitment to fair play and appropriate match conduct but also strengthens the Super Eagles’ standing in the AFCON qualifying rounds with the three points awarded by default.
