In a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, renowned Igbo musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah, was fatally shot by a Police Inspector in Enugu, sparking widespread grief and calls for justice across Nigeria.
The Alarmee reports that the incident occurred on the evening of October 25, 2024, at the headquarters of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command.
Igbo-Jah, celebrated for his contribution to traditional Ogene music, had reportedly visited the Tactical Squad’s headquarters for what was described as a friendly interaction with police personnel.
As he was leaving the premises, however, the visit took a sudden and devastating turn when, for reasons yet to be determined, a police inspector discharged his rifle, fatally wounding the musician.
The injured musician was swiftly transported to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his death shortly after arrival. His remains were later moved to the mortuary for preservation and an official autopsy.
The tragedy has prompted the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, to act swiftly, ordering an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The officer involved has been arrested and detained, pending the outcome of the probe, with CP Uzuegbu directing the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to lead the inquiry.
Uzuegbu extended his heartfelt condolences to Igbo-Jah’s family, friends, and the wider community, who are mourning the loss of a beloved figure in Igbo culture.
He labelled the incident as “unacceptable” and assured that any individuals found culpable would face full disciplinary action, vowing to deter such tragic incidents from recurring within the police ranks.
The Commissioner also urged calm among the public, inviting cooperation with the ongoing investigation to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
