The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar during its operation in Gaza on Wednesday.
The Alarmee reports that in a statement released Thursday, the IDF detailed how Sinwar was killed after an “extended pursuit.”
“For the past few weeks, IDF forces, together with the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), have been operating in southern Gaza, following intelligence that pointed to the suspected locations of senior Hamas members,” the IDF said.
“During this operation, soldiers from the 828th Brigade identified and neutralized three terrorists. After verifying the body, they confirmed that one of them was Yahya Sinwar,” the statement added.
Israeli sources earlier told CNN that Sinwar was encountered during a routine military operation.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant also confirmed the news in a post on X, formerly Twitter, emphasizing that Sinwar’s death was a message to the families of those killed and abducted, asserting that Israeli forces are committed to protecting the nation.
“Yahya Sinwar was eliminated. His end is a clear message to the families of the fallen and kidnapped – we are doing everything to ensure their safety. Residents of Gaza, the one who brought disaster upon you is no more, surrender and free the hostages,” Gallant tweeted.
