America’s Coco Gauff has defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s singles final to win the US Open title on Saturday.
Gauff won 2-6 6-3 6-2 to take the crown and won her first Grand Slam title at the age of 19.
The Belarusian Sabalenka was bidding for her second major after Australian Open win in January, but the younger American denied her the title.
Gauff falls to the floor as she sends the backhand passing shot whistling past Sabalenka.
The Belarusian came around the net to hug her opponent and there’s emotional scenes as Gauff leans on her racquet and bursts into tears.
She had to come from behind to get there but get there. Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam champion.
It was a fairy-tale ending for Gauff, who has her Grand Slam title four years after coming to the world’s attention as a 15-year-old.
The Alarmee reports that Gauff becomes the youngest woman to have won the Grand Slam title since Serena Williams in 1999.
