US President Joe Biden commended Israel’s elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a statement on Thursday, announcing plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortly.
“This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world,” Biden remarked in his written statement.
He expressed his intention to discuss with Netanyahu and other Israeli officials not only to congratulate them but also to address the urgent need to secure the release of hostages and to work towards a resolution that ends the ongoing conflict, which has inflicted severe harm on innocent civilians.
Biden indicated that Sinwar’s death presents a pivotal opportunity for a future in Gaza devoid of Hamas’s influence and for a political resolution that could benefit both Israelis and Palestinians.
“Yahya Sinwar was a major obstacle to achieving these objectives. With his removal, we can now focus on the work ahead,” he said.
