In a move marking the end of an era for Nigeria’s electoral body, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the conclusion of his second five-year term.
Yakubu‘s tenure, which began with his appointment as the 14th INEC Chairman in November 2015, was extended in 2020, allowing him to steer the commission through pivotal electoral cycles.
Over nearly a decade, his leadership has been credited with upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes, including the orchestration of multiple elections deemed free and fair by observers.
Expressing profound gratitude, President Tinubu lauded Yakubu’s unwavering commitment to national service and his instrumental role in fortifying the nation’s democratic foundations.
“Your dedication to ensuring transparent and credible elections has been a cornerstone of our progress,” the President remarked in an official statement.
To honour this legacy, Tinubu has elevated Yakubu to the prestigious rank of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of Nigeria’s highest civilian accolades, recognizing his exemplary contributions to public administration and electoral governance.
Ensuring continuity at INEC, the President has instructed Yakubu to transfer authority to the most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as acting head until a permanent successor is appointed through due process.
In a heartfelt response dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for the privilege of leading INEC since 2015, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defined his stewardship.
