The Department of State Services (DSS) has dismissed claims of an unlawful invasion of the offices of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja and Lagos, describing the reports as misleading.
In an official statement released on September 10, 2024, the DSS addressed what it termed as “inaccurate” and “malicious” allegations that its operatives had invaded SERAP’s premises.
According to the agency, two unarmed officers were sent to the SERAP office in Abuja as part of a lawful routine investigation, but their presence has been misinterpreted as an act of intimidation and harassment.
The DSS emphasized that such interactions are part of their standard procedures and should not be viewed as illegal actions. The agency reassured the public that it operates with professionalism and transparency, stressing that the claims of a raid were false.
The DSS further urged citizens to disregard these “false narratives” and emphasized the importance of public cooperation in national security matters.
In addition, the agency announced that its communication lines, including its website, email, and hotlines, remain open for public inquiries and reports.
This response comes amid growing concerns about the actions of security agencies in Nigeria, with civil society groups increasingly vigilant about the protection of fundamental human rights.
The DSS concluded by reaffirming its commitment to investigating any misleading content related to the incident.
