The Director-General, World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has described statement credited to her that she was being attacked for visiting President Bola Tinubu as wickedly false.
A false statement on social media on Wednesday, quoted Okonjo-Iweala as saying that she received “toxic calls and messages” after her meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Okonjo-Iweala, in the false message said: “I keep receiving toxic calls and messages regarding my meeting with the president yesterday, and from those I hold in very high esteem.
“Honestly, I am shocked at the contents of the messages and the tone of the callers. Has Nigeria sunk this low? A visit I made for the good of our dear nation is what they are using to threaten my life and family!
“You don’t recognise someone as your president yet begging him to save you from the hands of killers in your region.”
But in a sharp rebuttal on his Twitter page on Wednesday, the WTO boss said he had just been brought to her attention that there was a false statement circulating on Whatsapp attributed to her saying that she was being attacked for his visit to President Tinubu.
She wrote: “It has just been brought to my attention that there is a false statement circulating on what’s app attributed to me saying that I am being attacked for my visit to President Tinubu.
“That statement circulating is false, In fact wickedly false designed to create mischief among Nigerians. Please disregard the statement.”
Earlier, she posted: “Really good conversation with HE Mr President @officialABAT focused on supporting poor and vulnerable Nigerians at this difficult time. Also discussed the need for Nigerians to work together to build a strong job creating economy including what @wto can do to support!”
The WTO DG had on Tuesday visited President Tinubu in Abuja where they had useful discussions.
