Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their round-of-16 encounter on Thursday.
The Nigerian youngsters secured the hard-fought victory with goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan, while E. Delgado scored a late goal for Mexico.
Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead at half-time after a competitive first half.
The Flamingos returned for the second half determined to strengthen their advantage and succeeded in the 71st minute when Dunstan found the net to make it 2-0.
Mexico responded by increasing the pressure in search of a comeback, but Nigeria maintained their defensive discipline as the match approached its conclusion.
The Mexicans eventually pulled one back in 10 minutes into added time through Delgado, who converted an opportunity created by C. Campos. However, the late goal proved insufficient to prevent Nigeria from securing victory.
The Flamingos’ performance was reflected in the match statistics. Nigeria recorded 17 shots against Mexico’s 12, enjoyed 54 per cent possession and registered 37 touches in the opposition’s penalty area, compared with Mexico’s 14.
The victory sends the Flamingos into the quarter-finals, bringing them a step closer to their ambition of winning the tournament.
Nigeria will now prepare for the next stage as they seek to maintain their momentum and continue their pursuit of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
