Liverpool came from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal in a match overshadowed by two red cards for the hosts.
Brentford took the lead in the 44th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter powered a close-range header into the top-right corner from Igor Thiago’s cross, leaving Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker with no chance.
Liverpool struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities during the opening period, while Brentford threatened through their attacking players.
The visitors also suffered an early setback when midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was forced off with an injury in the 32nd minute and was replaced by Trey Nyoni.
The match took another dramatic turn in first-half stoppage time when Brentford midfielder Yegor Yarmolyuk was sent off following a VAR review of a contentious challenge. Referee John Brooks reviewed the incident before showing the Ukrainian midfielder a straight red card, leaving the hosts with 10 men.
Liverpool returned for the second half determined to exploit their numerical advantage, but Brentford continued to threaten on the counterattack.
Liverpool eventually drew level in the 62nd minute through Victor Munoz, who collected a pass from Florian Wirtz before unleashing a superb shot from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom-left corner.
The equaliser lifted Liverpool’s confidence as they intensified their pressure in search of a winner.
Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute when Isak reacted sharply inside the box to convert a headed-down cross from Bradley Barcola, firing Liverpool into a 2-1 lead.
The goal proved decisive as Brentford struggled to recover from the setback while playing with 10 men.
Liverpool continued to create opportunities, with Barcola coming close to extending the advantage when his effort struck the crossbar in the 79th minute.
Brentford’s task became even more difficult in the 92nd minute when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card and was sent off, reducing the hosts to nine men for the closing stages.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Brentford attempted to find a late equaliser, but Liverpool held firm through seven minutes of added time.
The final whistle confirmed a valuable away victory for Liverpool, who showed resilience to recover from Lewis-Potter’s opener and capitalise on Brentford’s disciplinary setbacks.
For Brentford, the defeat will be frustrating after taking the lead, but the dismissals of Yarmolyuk and Janelt proved costly in their bid to protect their advantage.
Isak’s second-half strike ultimately separated the sides, giving Liverpool all three points in a fiercely contested encounter at Brentford.
