President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may launch a military operation against Nigeria if the government fails to stop the killing of Christians in the country.
In a strongly worded post on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump accused the Nigerian government of allowing “Islamic terrorists” to carry out brutal attacks against Christians without consequence.
He declared that the U.S. would cut off all aid and could “go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing,” to “wipe out” those responsible.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote.
The U.S. President said he had already instructed “our Department of War to prepare for possible action,” warning that any attack “will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.”
The post, which has drawn over 21,000 likes and thousands of reposts within hours, has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles.
International observers have described Trump’s remarks as a potential flashpoint that could strain relations between Washington and Abuja.
Nigerian government officials have not yet issued an official response.
Trump’s comments come amid growing global concern over religious violence in Nigeria, where persistent clashes between farmers and herders, alongside extremist attacks in the North-East, have resulted in numerous deaths over the years.
