Ten-man Manchester City staged a resilient defensive display to claim a gritty 1-0 derby victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, weathering relentless pressure after playing over 70 minutes at a numerical disadvantage.
The afternoon swung dramatically in the 23rd minute when Phil Foden was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver following a reckless, high-stakes challenge.
The dismissal forced City manager Enzo Maresca into immediate tactical adjustments, surrendering possession and territory to Michael Carrick’s side while looking to protect their backline.
United pushed forward to capitalise, generating clear openings before the break. Marcus Rashford proved particularly threatening, striking the left upright with a curling free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
Moments after the restart, Kobbie Mainoo saw his precise effort crash off the very same post, while Gianluigi Donnarumma stood firm between the City posts to repel follow-up surges from Rashford and Matheus Cunha.
