At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy the passage of time. On Tuesday, the Portuguese captain delivered a clinical brace as Portugal dismantled Uzbekistan 5-0 in a commanding Round Two display at the FIFA World Cup, sending a clear message of their pedigree as genuine contenders for the title.
The result was never truly in doubt after Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing calmly from João Cancelo’s assist to settle any early nerves.
What followed was a masterclass in attacking fluency and tactical control under coach Roberto Martinez. Portugal dictated proceedings with superior possession and movement, exposing the limitations of their Central Asian opponents.
Nuno Mendes doubled the advantage in the 17th minute with a moment of individual excellence — a curling free-kick from the edge of the box that left Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvakhid Nematov helpless.
Uzbekistan briefly threatened a response when Azizjon Ganiev found the net from distance in the 29th minute, but VAR intervened to rule out the goal for a foul in the build-up, a decision that proved pivotal in maintaining Portugal’s momentum.
Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute, ghosting into the box to convert Bruno Fernandes’ precise threaded pass. The veteran forward’s second goal of the night effectively ended the contest before halftime, showcasing both his predatory instincts and enduring technical quality.
The second half brought no respite for Uzbekistan. An unfortunate own goal by Nematov in the 60th minute compounded their woes, before substitute Rafael Leão capped a superb team performance with a thunderous strike into the top corner three minutes from time.
Beyond Ronaldo’s headlines, Portugal’s squad depth and balance stood out. Fernandes orchestrated play with vision and precision, Mendes provided width and set-piece threat, and Leão injected fresh dynamism from the bench. Defensively, the Europeans remained disciplined, limiting Uzbekistan to minimal opportunities.
The victory reinforces Portugal’s status as one of the tournament’s most experienced and dangerous sides. Winners of the 2016 European Championship, they now carry the blend of youthful talent and veteran leadership, embodied by Ronaldo, required for deep World Championship runs.
