President Bola Tinubu has approved a major salary increase for Nigeria’s armed forces, with raises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for all ranks, effective September 1, 2026.
About 250,000 personnel across the services will benefit from the review, which will push the annual wage bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.
Under the new structure, officers from colonel upwards – including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent pay rise. Those from colonel down to warrant officer get 50 per cent, while the lowest ranks – private to staff sergeant – will see an 80 per cent increase.
The President, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the adjustment was a direct recognition of the courage and sacrifices of troops confronting banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other security threats nationwide.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” President Tinubu stated.
He added that his administration would continue to prioritise welfare alongside ongoing modernisation, ensuring personnel have the weapons, technology and working conditions needed to serve effectively.
“No nation can achieve greatness without security. We remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate threats and protect lives and property,” the President said.
He urged service members to see the review as a mark of the nation’s gratitude: “Take this gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation for the service you render. Together we shall prevail over those intent on destroying our nation.”
