A 37-year-old intensive care unit (ICU) nurse was shot and killed by federal officers in Minneapolis on Saturday morning, triggering renewed protests and deepening tensions over the presence of federal immigration agents in the city.
The man has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a registered nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System and a lifelong Minnesota resident.
Pretti, who held a concealed-carry permit and had no significant criminal record beyond minor traffic violations, was killed during an immigration enforcement operation led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
According to federal authorities, Pretti was armed with a 9 mm handgun and “approached officers” during the operation, leading a Border Patrol agent to fire “defensive shots.”
Local police confirmed that he was legally licensed to carry a firearm.
However, family members and witnesses have questioned aspects of the official account.
Pretti’s parents described him as a compassionate healthcare worker who cared deeply for others and frequently participated in civic causes.
They said he had taken part in protests earlier in the month following another federal shooting in the city but had no history of violent behaviour.
Bystander video circulating online appears to show Pretti holding a phone and not exhibiting overtly threatening behaviour when confronted by federal agents, though details remain subject to ongoing review by multiple investigative authorities.
The shooting occurred just weeks after another federal agent-involved killing in the city, heightening local concern about the expanding role of immigration enforcement operations under the current federal administration.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis officials have criticised the deployment of federal agents and called for clearer oversight and accountability.
In the aftermath of the incident, crowds of protesters gathered near the scene, with authorities working to maintain order amid demonstrations.
Local leaders have appealed for calm even as public frustration over the circumstances of the shooting continues to grow.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI, are investigating the exact sequence of events that led to Pretti’s death.
Federal officials have not yet released a full timeline or body-camera footage.
