The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, effective from January 2, 2026.
The decision follows a thorough review of increasing security concerns and the need to safeguard citizens from criminal acts facilitated by vehicles with unauthorised tinted windows.
The Police Force clarified that the court has not issued any restrictions preventing them from enforcing the law regarding tinted glass use.
However, in the interest of public convenience, the enforcement had been temporarily suspended to give motorists sufficient time to regularize their documents and complete the registration process.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, explained that despite the suspension, recent trends have shown a disturbing increase in criminal activities using vehicles with illegal tinted windows.
He said these crimes, ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping, have been exacerbated by the ability of individuals and criminal groups to hide their identities under the cover of tinted glass, saying that the enforcement aims to mitigate these threats.
“We are resuming the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit to protect our communities from these rising security concerns,” said Egbetokun.
He further assured the public that the enforcement would be carried out with the utmost professionalism, respecting citizens’ rights and adhering to the rule of law.
Egbetokun urged motorists to apply for the Tinted Glass Permit through the proper channels to ensure their vehicles comply with the legal requirements.
The Police Force, in its statement, emphasized its commitment to promoting public safety and working closely with stakeholders to maintain security throughout the country.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, further stressed that the resumption of enforcement is a proactive measure to enhance security and curb the misuse of tinted windows for illegal activities.
He reiterated the Police Force’s dedication to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.
