Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State on Monday announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 for the State civil service with effect from 1 May, 2024.
The State Government was initially paying N40,000 minimum wage, which it has now jacked to N70,000.
The move, made during the commissioning of the new Labour House named after former Governor Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has sparked mixed reactions among the public.
While some view it as a step towards improving workers’ welfare, others see it as a political move or distraction.
This decision makes Edo State the first to pay a minimum wage of N70,000, contrasting with other states still struggling to implement the N30,000 minimum wage.
