The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the deployment of its standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic.
This was part of the outcome of today’s meeting of ECOWAS leaders in Abuja, chaired by its Chairman, President Bola Tinubu.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting was read by the President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray on Thursday.
ECOWAS also directed the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.
The communique further underscored its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.
The resolution read in part: “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.
“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
