The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of two individuals for illegal waste disposal in the Igando-Ikotun area of Lagos State, as authorities intensify enforcement against environmental offenders.
The convicts, Kingsley Adieme and Rachel Onyekachi, were arrested during an overnight sanitation surveillance operation conducted by LAWMA’s Operation W.I.S.E Enforcement Team in collaboration with the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area Environmental Monitoring Unit.
They were subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, where both pleaded guilty to indiscriminate dumping of refuse. The court sentenced them to three months’ imprisonment.
Reacting to the development, LAWMA Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the convictions as a strong signal of the state government’s determination to enforce environmental regulations.
He stated that the action reflects Lagos State’s zero tolerance for environmental infractions, adding that the authority would continue to strengthen enforcement while urging residents to comply with approved waste management practices.
Gbadegesin advised residents to engage only LAWMA-accredited Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators, warning against patronising illegal waste handlers whose activities undermine proper waste disposal systems.
He also called on members of the public to support enforcement efforts by reporting environmental violations through LAWMA’s official communication channels, including its WhatsApp line and social media platforms.
The agency reiterated that enforcement operations would be sustained across the state to drive compliance and advance efforts towards a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
