Carlos Alcaraz etched his name deeper into tennis history on Sunday, defeating Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the Australian Open men’s final to claim his seventh Grand Slam title at the age of just 22.
The world number one became the youngest man ever to win all four major tournaments, completing the career Grand Slam with a victory on the blue hard courts of Melbourne Park.
Alcaraz, the rising Spanish superstar, overcame a sluggish start in which Djokovic dominated the opening set 6-2.
The 38-year-old Serb, bidding to claim a record-extending 25th major singles title, showcased his trademark defensive mastery and crowd engagement early on.
However, Alcaraz quickly adjusted, leveling the match with a commanding 6-2 second set and extending his dominance to take the third 6-3.
The fourth set delivered the drama expected from two generational talents. It featured prolonged holds, shifting momentum, and intense physical battles that pushed both players near the three-hour mark.
Djokovic repeatedly whipped the crowd into a frenzy, waving his arms for support and channeling energy reminiscent of “Hulk Hogan” mode, as one observer noted, while Alcaraz countered with precise angles and court coverage that forced his opponent to cover maximum distance.
Key moments highlighted the match’s intensity. Alcaraz saved a critical break point in the fourth set with an “almighty hold,” roaring in celebration to move within one game of victory.
Commentators praised his tactical brilliance. Former British number one Annabel Croft highlighted Alcaraz’s “unbelievable ability to use the entire court and force his opponent to run the furthest distance possible.”
Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash noted the fluctuating energy levels, observing how both players reignited late in the set after earlier dips.
The decisive breakthrough came after a mesmerizing 24-shot rally, described as cleaner and more captivating with each exchange, that left the crowd in stunned silence before Djokovic netted a backhand.
Championship points followed shortly after, as Djokovic stumbled on a deep shot into the net. Alcaraz sealed the 7-5 fourth-set win, prompting widespread acclaim: “Rewrite those history books, folks. A quite remarkable talent.”
The victory underscores Alcaraz’s rapid ascent. At 22, his blend of power, agility, drop shots, aces, and mental resilience has redefined the sport’s future.
Djokovic, despite his experience and clutch serving under pressure, fell short of extending his legacy further in what may represent one of the final major showdowns between the veteran icon and the prodigy.
