The leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of activism, advocacy, and dedication to the Nigerian cause.
According to a statement released by his family, the elder statesman died peacefully on Friday morning at his Lekki residence in Lagos State.
The statement, signed by his children, Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, confirmed that their father took his final breath surrounded by loved ones.
“With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo,” the family said.
Pa Adebanjo, a foremost nationalist, lawyer, and political leader, was a staunch advocate of true federalism and a fearless voice for justice and equity.
Despite his advanced age, he remained active in national discourse, pushing for a better Nigeria until his last days.
His widow, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, 94, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, are left to mourn the passing of a man whose impact spanned decades.
The family assured that funeral arrangements would be announced soon after consultations with his close associates and interest groups across Nigeria and beyond.
In the meantime, condolence registers have been opened at his Lagos residence in Lekki Phase 1 and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Pa Adebanjo’s death marks the end of an era for Afenifere and Nigeria’s political landscape, as tributes continue to pour in for the legendary leader.
