President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The appointment follows Oyedepo’s transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the mainstream Federal Civil Service.
A letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, said the decision was taken in the public interest.
Oyedepo will fill the vacancy created by the impending retirement of the current DPP, Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who is expected to complete the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyedepo is a 2007 law graduate of the University of Ilorin and was called to the Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008.
He brings to the role over 15 years of experience at the EFCC, where he specialised in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes and also served as Head of the Monitoring Unit.
He was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark Process and Industrial Developments v Nigeria (P&ID) case, widely regarded as one of the most significant arbitration disputes involving the country.
According to official sources, his appointment is expected to strengthen the Federal Government’s prosecutorial capacity, reduce dependence on external legal counsel for critical cases, and ensure greater coherence and consistency in national legal strategy.
Oyedepo’s service record has earned him several recognitions, including EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.
The appointment underscores the Tinubu administration’s focus on reinforcing key justice sector institutions with seasoned professionals as part of broader governance and rule-of-law reforms.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement signed by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information and Public Relations, State House, dated December 30, 2025.
