The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSSC) has issued a robust denial of involvement in a widely shared social media video that allegedly depicts one of its officials soliciting bribes from residents in the Oworonshoki area amid ongoing safety enforcement operations.
In an official statement released Thursday, signed by Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Okoh Adewunmi, the commission unequivocally disavowed the individual featured in the footage-a woman identified as Mariam Bunmi, declaring her an impostor with no connection to the agency.
“The said Mariam Bunmi is NOT and has never been an employee of the Lagos State Safety Commission. She is unknown to the Commission in any capacity,” the statement asserted.
The LSSSC emphasized its unwavering dedication to ethical standards, highlighting a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion, or any form of misconduct.
“Our mandate is to ensure the safety of lives and property of Lagosians,” the statement stated, adding that “We therefore urge members of the public to disregard the claims in the video and to remain vigilant against impostors parading as officials of the Commission.”
The agency extended a direct call to media outlets, including Lagos Reporters, which helped disseminate the video, advising them to exercise due diligence by verifying information and official identities prior to publication.
To empower residents, the commission provided clear guidance on handling such scams: “For clarification or verification, members of the public are encouraged not to pay any money to individuals posing as officials of the Lagos State Safety Commission but to apprehend and report such fraudulent acts through our official channels.”
Reaffirming its core mission, the LSSSC vowed to persist in promoting safety compliance statewide while actively shielding the public from fraudsters exploiting its name for personal gain.
