Controversial political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has launched a blistering attack on Labour Party’s Peter Obi, accusing him of hypocrisy and selective criticism in his comments on Nigeria’s democracy.
In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Omokri questioned Obi’s democratic credentials, alleging that the former Anambra State governor had ties to the military dictatorship of the late General Sani Abacha, a regime notorious for its brutal repression and high-profile assassinations.
“You can imagine Peter Obi, a man who was in bed with the Abacha despotic regime… now accusing a pro-democratic activist like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of destroying democracy,” Omokri wrote, referencing Tinubu’s pro-democracy activism and exile following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election won by Chief MKO Abiola.
Omokri pointed out that Obi, who has frequently criticised the Tinubu administration, never spoke out against the abuses of the Abacha era, an administration under which prominent Nigerians such as Pa Alfred Rewane, Kudirat Abiola, and Vice Admiral Tunde Elegbede were assassinated.
“If democracy is truly in recession, how come President Tinubu allowed your bank to thrive and make ₦385.2 billion in the year ending December 2024, compared to ₦124.3 billion in 2023?” Omokri asked, implying Obi’s business empire has flourished under a government he routinely condemns.
He further challenged Obi to publicly disclose his actions and positions during the Abacha years, asking, “Peter, tell Nigerians what you did during Abacha’s regime!”
The Alarmee reports that the scathing post is the latest in a series of verbal attacks between supporters of the two political rivals, with Omokri continuing to align himself as a fierce critic of Obi’s rising political influence.
