Two U.S. service members were killed in action on July 17 while defending a position in Jordan against a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, U.S. Central Command announced Saturday.
A third American remains missing amid the assault, which underscores the intensifying military confrontation between the United States and Iran in the Middle East.
CENTCOM stated that U.S. and partner forces were engaged in defensive operations when the attacks occurred. Four additional service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals for treatment but have since been discharged. Other personnel sustaining minor injuries were evaluated and returned to duty.
Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM said it is withholding the identities of the fallen and further operational details until at least 24 hours after next-of-kin notifications are complete.
The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Iran shadow war, now spilling into direct exchanges.
It follows repeated U.S. strikes on Iranian surveillance, logistics, weapons storage, and maritime targets aimed at neutralizing threats in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
Iran has responded with missile and drone launches targeting U.S. and allied positions across Jordan, Kuwait, and Gulf areas.
Reports indicate Iranian retaliation has also affected civilian infrastructure, including damage to a desalination plant near Jask that disrupted water supplies for thousands.
U.S. operations in the region involve substantial naval and air assets enforcing measures against Iranian aggression. Iranian officials have issued warnings of broader offensive actions if strikes persist.
The deaths come as tensions remain high over Iran’s nuclear program, regional proxy activities, and freedom of navigation in critical waterways.
U.S. forces in Jordan, including at bases like Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, support broader coalition efforts to deter Iranian expansionism and protect allies.
This marks the first reported U.S. fatalities from direct Iranian kinetic attacks in this latest phase of hostilities.
Pentagon officials have not yet detailed the scale of the incoming barrage or the effectiveness of defensive systems, but the outcome highlights the persistent risks to American personnel deployed in forward positions.
