Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the party, signalling a major shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation in a statement on Sunday, declaring that his exit from the party takes immediate effect. He stated that the decision, though difficult, became necessary in view of what he described as the need for “strategic realignment” in the country’s political space.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said, noting that his long-standing relationship with the party made the decision a challenging one.
The former governor explained that the current political trajectory in the country requires fresh alliances, adding that he intends to identify with another platform that offers a stronger opportunity to influence national development.
Kwankwaso, who served as the NNPP’s national leader and presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections, expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership and members for their support during his time in the organisation.
He specifically acknowledged the role of the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and members across all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Despite his departure, Kwankwaso stated that he remains committed to collaborating with political stakeholders in pursuit of a better future for Nigeria.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
