Arsenal produced a late surge at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Everton in Premier League Round 30.
For 89 minutes, Mikel Arteta’s side looked destined for a frustrating evening against a resolute Everton defence. Then, deep into added time, the deadlock was finally broken.
With the clock ticking into the 90th minute, Viktor Gyökeres fired Arsenal ahead from close range after latching onto a pass from Piero Hincapie.
The Swedish striker, introduced as a substitute just minutes earlier, made an instant impact to send the home crowd into raptures.
The goal finally rewarded Arsenal‘s dominance. The Gunners had piled on pressure throughout the second half, with Eberechi Eze forcing a brilliant save from Jordan Pickford in the 77th minute before Bukayo Saka was denied by the Everton goalkeeper just before the hour mark.
If the first goal brought relief, the second brought sheer ecstasy. Deep into the eighth minute of stoppage time, 17-year-old Max Dowman etched his name into Arsenal folklore, beating Pickford to register his first Premier League goal and double the lead at 2–0.
The teenager, who had been introduced in the 74th minute for Martin Zubimendi, showed composure beyond his years to apply the finishing touch to a memorable cameo.
David Moyes’s Everton side will feel aggrieved to leave empty-handed after a disciplined defensive display. The visitors came closest to scoring in the first half when Dwight McNeil unleashed a thunderous effort from the edge of the box that crashed against the left post.
James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall posed problems from set pieces, but Arsenal’s persistence eventually told against a tiring Everton backline.
The victory came at a cost for the hosts, with Jurrien Timber forced off through injury in the 38th minute, replaced by Cristhian Mosquera. William Saliba also required medical attention during the second half but managed to continue.
