Chelsea’s resurgence under manager Liam Rosenior hit a frustrating roadblock on Saturday as the Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Anthony Gordon’s first-half strike provided the difference in a tightly contested Premier League Round 30 encounter.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Chelsea were left ruing missed opportunities as Eddie Howe’s side produced a disciplined defensive display to secure a crucial away victory.
The decisive moment arrived in the 18th minute when Joe Willock sprayed a pass out to Gordon, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to silence the home crowd. The goal came against the run of play but showcased Newcastle’s efficiency on the counter-attack.
Chelsea responded positively, with Alejandro Garnacho forcing Aaron Ramsdale into a fine save moments later. Cole Palmer also went close, gathering a short pass deep inside the box before being denied by a desperate defensive block.
The statistics told a story of Chelsea dominance without reward. The Blues registered 15 shots to Newcastle’s five and enjoyed 64 percent possession, but too often found Ramsdale equal to their efforts or saw final touches desert them in the penalty area.
Reece James came closest to an equalizer in stoppage time, his mid-range free kick rattling the right post with Ramsdale beaten. Joao Pedro then rose to meet a Cole Palmer cross in the 98th minute, but his header sailed agonizingly over the bar.
Trevoh Chalobah had earlier squandered a glorious opportunity in the 79th minute, somehow directing a close-range header wide after James delivered a perfect cross into the box.
The match was not without its contentious moments. Newcastle appealed for a penalty in the 35th minute when Malick Thiaw went down under a challenge, but referee Paul Tierney waved away the protests before a VAR review confirmed the decision.
Chelsea themselves had penalty claims turned down in the 63rd minute when Palmer went down under a challenge, with Tierney again unmoved.
Tempers flared in the closing stages as frustration grew among the home side. Aaron Ramsdale was booked for time-wasting in the 84th minute, while Lewis Hall received a yellow card for delaying the restart shortly after.
