Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has expressed profound grief over the passing of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.
He described him as a father figure, a bridge-builder, and an unwavering advocate for justice and equity.
Chief Clark, a revered nonagenarian, passed away on Monday at the age of 97.
In a condolence message to his family, Dr. Jonathan extolled his legacy, stating that his wisdom, courage, and dedication to national unity had inspired generations of leaders, including himself.
“Chief E.K. Clark was not just a father figure to me but a peerless icon of Nigeria’s political landscape, a voice of reason, and a relentless advocate for justice, equity, and unity,” Jonathan said. “His life was marked by selfless service, unwavering courage, and an unyielding commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region and Nigeria as a whole.”
Jonathan also reflected on Clark’s vital role in shaping the nation’s political discourse, particularly his tireless advocacy for the Niger Delta and good governance.
He acknowledged the elder statesman’s invaluable support during his presidency, describing his counsel as instrumental in navigating national challenges.
“His passion for the Niger Delta and his relentless pursuit of peace and progress, not only in the region but across the country, remain indelible marks of his legacy. Chief Clark’s passing is not just a loss to his family but to the entire nation, as we have lost one of our most respected and influential leaders,” Jonathan added.
The former president further praised Clark’s lifelong dedication to fairness and nation-building, noting that his contributions would be remembered for generations.
“Chief E.K. Clark lived a fulfilled life, leaving behind a legacy of courage, resilience, and service to humanity. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may God grant his immediate family, the people of the Niger Delta, and all Nigerians the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
