Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in last Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, has labeled the election as one of the most tragic moments in the state’s history.
In a statement addressed to his supporters, Ighodalo expressed disappointment over the outcome of the election, where Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner.
Ighodalo finished second, while Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata came third.
Ighodalo criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of overseeing a process that undermined the will of the people.
He urged his supporters to remain steadfast, despite the setback.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the people of Edo State who braved the rain, intimidation, threats, harassment, arrests, and financial inducements to cast their votes for us on September 21, 2024. You are the true defenders of our democracy, and your commitment to a better Edo State will not be forgotten,” he said.
He emphasized that his candidacy was not driven by a quest for power but by a sincere desire to serve the people and bring prosperity to Edo State.
Reflecting on his campaign, he said he had visited every ward and local government area to engage with the citizens and share his vision for the future.
“That day will remain one of the darkest in our history, marked by the blatant theft of our mandate and the disgraceful distortion of the people’s will,” Ighodalo lamented.
“But even in the face of this injustice, we must not lose hope. The apparent victory of wrongdoing over good is fleeting.”
Thanking his supporters for their belief in his vision and for their tireless efforts, he remarked, “Together, we waged a strong campaign, and your unwavering support was clear in the ballots, before our progress was unjustly interrupted on September 21, 2024, by those who do not have the best interests of our state at heart.”
He concluded by reassuring his supporters that the journey to a prosperous Edo State is far from over, urging them to remain committed to their shared goal of progress for the state.
“Our quest for a better Edo State does not end here; it is only just beginning. Let us continue to stay focused and united in our mission. You stood by me during the campaign, and I assure you, as we move forward into an uncertain future, I will not abandon you,” Ighodalo vowed.
