Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, has died at the age of 90.
Tukur died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, three days before his 91st birthday, according to a statement issued by his family and signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur.
The family announced his death with grief, describing the former PDP chairman as its “beloved father and patriarch” and acknowledging his contributions to his family, community, Adamawa State and Nigeria.
The statement said Tukur died in submission to the will of Almighty Allah, while the family prayed for forgiveness of his shortcomings and the acceptance of his good deeds.
The family also expressed appreciation to those who had offered prayers, condolences and support following his death.
It said details of the Janazah, the Islamic funeral prayer, and other burial arrangements would be announced later.
Tukur, who was born on September 15, 1935, was a prominent political and business figure whose career spanned public administration, politics and economic advocacy.
He served as governor of the old Gongola State and later became Minister of Industries during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha.
Before his return to frontline politics, Tukur served as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
He also held various positions in the business sector and was involved in efforts promoting African economic development.
Tukur assumed the national chairmanship of the PDP in March 2012 during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
His period as chairman coincided with a turbulent phase in the ruling party, marked by internal disagreements and factional struggles that eventually led to the emergence of the “New PDP” faction in 2013.
He resigned as national chairman in January 2014, bringing an end to his tenure at a time when the party was grappling with deepening internal divisions.
Following his resignation, Tukur was appointed Ambassador-at-Large by the Jonathan administration.
The former PDP chairman remained one of the notable political figures from Adamawa to have occupied influential positions at both the state and federal levels.
His death comes as the PDP and Nigeria’s political establishment continue to navigate a changing political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The family, in its announcement, asked Nigerians and well-wishers to continue to remember the deceased in their prayers.
It prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive Tukur’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
