An extraordinary World Cup knockout match unfolded at MetLife Stadium as Norway pulled off a stunning 2-1 upset over five-time world champions Brazil, booking their first-ever place in the tournament’s quarterfinals.
Powered by a second-half masterclass from Erling Haaland and heroic goalkeeping from Ørjan Nyland, the Scandinavian side preserved their historically unbeaten record against the South American heavyweights in dramatic fashion.
The tone for a chaotic evening was set early in the first half when a VAR review penalised Norway’s Kristoffer Ajer for a challenge in the box.
Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães stepped up to take the 14th-minute penalty, but a locked-in Nyland guessed correctly, diving to his right to turn the effort away and spark visual celebration from the underdogs.
While Patrick Berg had an early Norwegian goal ruled out for offside, Brazil gradually commanded the tempo, forcing Nyland into several world-class saves, most notably denying a low drive from Vinícius Júnior just before the interval.
Ståle Solbakken shook up the dynamic at halftime, introducing Andreas Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb to give Norway extra directness.
The gamble completely altered the match’s complexion. In the 79th minute, Schjelderup carved open space to float an inviting cross into the box where Haaland rose highest, burying a thumping header into the back of Alisson’s net.
Brazil’s manager Carlo Ancelotti tried to summon an instant response by unleashing Neymar from the bench, but it was Norway who seemed to put the game to bed in the 90th minute. Schjelderup again found Haaland at the edge of the area, and the clinical striker drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to stretch the lead to 2-0.
A frantic seven minutes of stoppage time dissolved into sheer madness when Norway substitute Leo Østigård conceded a penalty for a reckless aerial challenge in the 99th minute.
Neymar confidently converted the spot-kick to pull Brazil within one, but referee Ismail Elfath blew the final whistle immediately after the restart.
Tempers flared briefly as a shellshocked Brazilian squad confronted their celebrating opponents, but the history books had already been written. Norway marches on to the last eight, leaving a devastated Brazil to ponder another premature knockout exit.
