Nigeria and the United States have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing war against terrorism following a joint military operation that reportedly neutralised a senior Islamic State commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok.
President Bola Tinubu disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, revealing that the overnight counterterrorism operation was carried out by the Nigerian Armed Forces in collaboration with the United States Armed Forces.
According to the President, the coordinated strike targeted Al-Manuki’s compound in the Lake Chad Basin, leading to the elimination of the wanted IS leader alongside several of his key lieutenants.
Tinubu described the mission as a significant demonstration of the strong security partnership between Nigeria and the United States in combating terrorism and insurgency.
The President expressed appreciation to the United States government for its support, while specifically acknowledging the role of former U.S. President Donald Trump in advancing the collaborative effort.
He also praised the military personnel from both countries for what he termed their professionalism, bravery and commitment during the operation.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s determination to intensify military offensives against terrorist hideouts and dismantle insurgent networks threatening national security across the country.
“The operation represents another decisive step in our collective resolve to rid the nation and the region of terrorism,” the President stated.
