The Nigeria Police Council (NPC) has unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), clearing the path for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.
The endorsement came during a high-level council meeting at the State House, presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and key officials including Police Service Commission Chairman retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
President Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP in late February following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.
The council’s ratification marks the formal transition to substantive leadership, with the swearing-in ceremony set to occur during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting.
Disu, born April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent. A career officer with over three decades of service, he holds advanced qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, reflecting a commitment to modern, knowledge-driven policing.
His career spans critical operational, investigative, and strategic roles nationwide. Notably, Disu commanded the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos from 2015 to 2021, earning widespread acclaim for excellence in crime control and proactive operations.
He also served as Assistant Commissioner in the Criminal Investigation Department and Officer-in-Charge of the anti-kidnapping unit in Rivers State (2014–2015), Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command, and most recently as Assistant Inspector-General overseeing the Special Protection Unit and Force CID Annex in Lagos.
Praise for Disu poured in during the council session. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted his exemplary service with the RRS, crediting him for significant improvements in public safety.
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule described the appointment as merit-based on Disu’s stellar record.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who worked closely with Disu in Rivers and the FCT, lauded his professionalism, efficiency as a crime fighter, and strategic impact on security. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
The Alarmee reports that Disu’s appointment as the substantive IGP positions him to build on his track record of intelligence-led and community-focused policing as he assumes full command of the Nigeria Police Force.
His swearing-in on Wednesday will formalize his role, with expectations high for continued reforms and enhanced public safety across the country.
