In a major financial disclosure tied to one of the world’s most high-profile splits, Bill Gates has transferred nearly $8 billion to his ex-wife Melinda French Gates’ private charity, a move linked to their long-settled 2021 divorce and a formal separation of philanthropic endeavours completed in 2024.
According to recently released tax filings reviewed by The New York Times DealBook, Gates made a $7.88 billion donation in 2024 to Melinda’s Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, a nonprofit she launched after stepping down from co-leading the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The transfer is part of a broader $12.5 billion agreement reached when the couple formally divided their charity work.
The donation is now being recognised as one of the largest divorce-related payouts ever disclosed, drawing global attention due to the Gateses’ stature as among the world’s richest and most influential philanthropic figures.
Critics and commentators have noted that the transfer effectively cements Melinda’s independence in directing funds toward her chosen causes, including women’s empowerment and family-focused initiatives.
Melinda French Gates, who announced her departure from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in May 2024, established Pivotal Philanthropies to pursue issues close to her mission, a shift emphasised by her leadership in directing large grants toward social causes.
Her separation from the joint foundation followed careful planning to ensure both charities could continue to function without jeopardising ongoing global health and development programmes.
While the financial details of the 2021 divorce settlement were largely confidential for years, this tax disclosure offers rare transparency into the magnitude of assets exchanged long after the legal dissolution of the marriage.
Melinda reportedly received significant assets, an estimated $76 billion worth according to past reporting on their split, making it the largest divorce settlement in history when adjusted for valuations.
The Gates’ divorce followed 27 years of marriage and was solemnised amid public scrutiny over personal matters, including Gates’ past professional and personal associations, matters that Melinda has acknowledged played a role in her decision to end the marriage.
Among those was Bill Gates’ controversial interactions with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which resurfaced in legal and media narratives years later.
Despite their separation, both Gates and French Gates have continued philanthropic work independently, reflecting a broader shift in how their combined wealth is being deployed across global initiatives and domestic priorities alike.
