Chelsea Football Club are poised to complete the signing of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho in a £40 million transfer.
The 21-year-old Argentine is scheduled to undergo medical tests and sign a seven-year contract in London on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, which includes a 10% sell-on clause for United, marking a significant coup for the Blues as the summer transfer window nears its close.
Garnacho, a product of United’s academy, has been a long-standing target for Chelsea, with negotiations intensifying in recent weeks.
Romano, who first reported the story in July, noted that the winger rejected offers from Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, and Saudi Pro League clubs, insisting on a move to Stamford Bridge.
The agreement follows a compromise between the clubs, with United initially valuing Garnacho at £50 million while Chelsea pushed for a fee closer to £30 million.
The final £40 million package, bolstered by the sell-on clause, represents pure profit for United under Premier League profit and sustainability rules, given Garnacho’s homegrown status.
The transfer comes after a turbulent period for Garnacho at Old Trafford. Under manager Ruben Amorim, the winger fell out of favour, notably after expressing frustration over limited minutes in United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham in May 2025.
Excluded from United’s pre-season tour and relegated to training separately, Garnacho’s desire for a new challenge was evident.
Amorim acknowledged the situation, stating, “He’s a talented boy, but sometimes things don’t work out,” signaling the end of Garnacho’s tenure at United, where he made 93 Premier League appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 10 assists.
Chelsea, under Enzo Maresca, view Garnacho as a key addition to their attacking arsenal, which already includes summer signings Jamie Gittens, João Pedro, Liam Delap, and Estêvão Willian.
Maresca’s system, reliant on wide players to stretch defences, sees Garnacho competing with Gittens for a left-wing role.
According to The Alarmee, the Blues, who have spent over £250 million this window, conducted extensive background checks on Garnacho’s character, confident he can revive his career in west London after a challenging season.
His 2024 FIFA Puskás Award-winning overhead kick against Everton underscores his potential to thrill Stamford Bridge.
