Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train on Tuesday, which left at least 14 passengers injured.
In a statement on his official X handle, Atiku said while it was a relief that no lives were lost, the incident had once again exposed serious safety gaps in Nigeria’s railway system.
“I am deeply concerned about the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train on Tuesday, which resulted in injuries to at least 14 passengers. It is a relief that there were no fatalities, but this incident underscores the urgent need for action,” Atiku wrote.
The former Vice President demanded an immediate and thorough investigation by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to uncover the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
“We need transparent updates and a commitment to strengthening safety protocols that will restore public confidence in our rail infrastructure system,” he added.
The Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor has faced recurring security and operational challenges, with this latest derailment renewing public concerns over the safety and reliability of rail transport in the country.
