The Lagos State Government has issued a traffic advisory to motorists ahead of emergency repair works on the Maryland Independence Bridge.
The repair is scheduled to commence on Saturday, 16 August 2025, and conclude on Tuesday, 19 August 2025.
The repairs, targeting a damaged section of the bridge’s wall, will occur nightly between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. to minimise disruption.
According to the advisory, the main carriageway of the bridge will be closed to vehicular movement during these hours.
Motorists travelling inbound from Oshodi, Ojuelegba, Stadium, or Lagos are advised to follow an alternative route. “Motorists inbound Oshodi/Ojuelegba/Stadium/Lagos will be diverted at Maria Lodge in Maryland into the Maryland Bridge to connect Idiroko inwards Anthony to continue their journeys,” the statement read.
However, the government confirmed that “motorists inbound Ketu/Ikorodu from Lagos/Stadium/Anthony will have unhindered vehicular movement” during the repair period.
The Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured the public that traffic management personnel would be deployed to the affected area to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce inconvenience.
“Traffic management personnel will be deployed to the affected area to minimise inconvenience and manage vehicular movement during the repairs,” Osiyemi stated.

The advisory also addressed the purpose of the partial road closure, noting that it is “part of the traffic management plan for the rehabilitation and replacement works on the expansion joints of Maryland Independence Bridge.”
Osiyemi appealed for patience from motorists, acknowledging the potential for disruption but stressing the necessity of the repairs to ensure the bridge’s safety and longevity.
The government said motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and adhere to the provided diversions to avoid delays during the repair period.
