US Vice President JD Vance has blamed the Iran war for the Republican Party’s sweeping defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, acknowledging that the conflict contributed significantly to Democrats’ capture of both chambers of Congress.
Vance’s admission comes as President Donald Trump and his party face mounting political pressure following the Democrats’ electoral gains, which have raised questions about the administration’s foreign policy, economic management and political direction ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking after the election setback, Vance directly linked the Republican losses to the war, citing Trump’s own assessment of the political consequences.
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance said.
The Vice President also acknowledged that the Republican Party needed to confront voters’ concerns about the rising cost of living, indicating that dissatisfaction over household expenses had compounded the political damage caused by the conflict.
He said the party must undertake a broader examination of its America First priorities and its relationship with Israel, issues that have become increasingly contentious within sections of the Republican political base.
Vance’s comments suggest that the election defeat has exposed divisions within the Republican Party over the direction of Trump’s foreign policy and whether the administration’s involvement in the Iran conflict is consistent with its commitment to prioritising American interests.
The Vice President also acknowledged Republican figures who had previously warned that the war could carry serious electoral consequences, saying they were entitled to claim vindication.
He conceded that those who had cautioned against the political risks of the conflict had every right to say, “I told you so.”
