Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) roared back from an early second-half deficit to demolish Chelsea 5-2 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie, leaving the English side’s European hopes hanging by a thread.
The match was a tale of two halves, with Chelsea briefly silencing the French capital after the interval, only to be swept away by a devastating late salvo from the hosts.
The 5-2 scoreline gives Luis Enrique’s men a commanding advantage ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
The hosts drew first blood in the 10th minute. A pinpoint cross into the box was headed down by Joao Neves, and Bradley Barcola reacted quickest to fire home from close range, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Chelsea, however, showed resilience. After weathering the PSG storm, they found an equalizer in the 28th minute. A sublime lofted pass from Enzo Fernandez picked out Malo Gusto making a run into the box, and the full-back slotted coolly past the keeper to make it 1-1.
Just before halftime, the see-saw battle tipped back in PSG’s favor. A swift counter-attack caught Chelsea off guard, and Ousmane Dembele weaved his way through the defence to score a wonderful individual goal, restoring the lead at 2-1 going into the break.
The visitors came out fighting in the second half. In the 57th minute, Enzo Fernandez turned from provider to scorer. Latched onto a brilliant pass, the Argentine midfielder showed composure inside the box to fire a first-time shot inside the right post, leveling the scores once more at 2-2.
For a moment, the momentum seemed with the Blues. But the game turned dramatically on a catastrophic error by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen in the 74th minute. Under minimal pressure, the keeper fumbled the ball, allowing Vitinha to pounce on the loose ball and slot into an empty net. 3-2 to PSG.
The goal deflated Chelsea and ignited PSG. With the visitors pushing forward in search of another equalizer, gaps began to appear. In the 86th minute, substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who had entered the fray just minutes earlier, produced a moment of magic. The Georgian winger weaved his way through the defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box that nestled inside the right post. 4-2.
Deep into stoppage time, Kvaratskhelia added a fifth to compound Chelsea’s misery. Achraf Hakimi played him in unmarked inside the box, and the forward made no mistake, slotting low into the net to complete a stunning cameo and a resounding victory.
