A fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at Afriland Tower, a six-storey commercial building located on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The Alarmee reports that the building houses a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) among other offices. Videos circulating on social media show thick smoke billowing from the structure, with some occupants reportedly attempting to escape via windows.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, arrived promptly at the scene.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, nine individuals were rescued from the building, with five requiring resuscitation. Several others managed to escape unhurt.
UBA has clarified that the incident occurred at its Broad Street branch and not at its Marina head office, as some reports had suggested.
The bank assured the public that all staff and customers have been accounted for and that the situation is under control.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the origin and extent of the damage. No fatalities have been reported at this time.
This incident has raised concerns about fire safety in high-rise commercial buildings in Lagos.
Authorities are expected to review safety protocols and building regulations to prevent future occurrences.
