Lagos State Government has condemned the brutal assault on Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) at Mile 2, describing the attack as a “reprehensible affront” to state authority that will not go unpunished.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the government expressed outrage at the incident, noting that the officers were viciously attacked while carrying out their lawful duties.
“The Lagos Ministry of Transportation has received with profound indignation the reports of the grievous incident at Mile 2. This appalling and utterly reprehensible act is a direct affront not only to the officers involved but also to the authority and dignity of the Lagos State Government. It will never go unpunished,” the statement read.
Osiyemi reaffirmed that VIO officials are empowered by law to enforce road safety and protect lives, stressing that any assault on them amounts to undermining the rule of law and subverting public order.
“The perpetrators of this disgraceful attack will be relentlessly pursued, apprehended, and subjected to the full sanctions of the law. This descent into lawlessness will not be tolerated,” he warned.
While confirming that the injured officers are responding to treatment, the commissioner maintained that the gravity of the assault remains, and the government is resolute in ensuring that justice is served.
He assured all VIO personnel of the state’s unwavering support and commitment to their safety, noting that criminal elements would not be allowed to intimidate or obstruct the lawful work of government agencies.
“We stand in unwavering solidarity with the injured officers and reassure all personnel of our absolute commitment to their safety and dignity. The Ministry will not relent in its duty to protect those who serve,” Osiyemi said.
